Beth Kolko Research Funded with a Grand Challenges Exploration Grant from the Gates Foundation

The University of Washington announced today that it has received a US$100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) Professor Charlotte Lee was selected to receive a Google Research Award in July 2010 for her proposal, "Investigating the Role of Online Calendar Use in the Cultivation and Maintenance of Relationships."

The Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education (CAEE), directed by HCDE Professor Cindy Atman, recently released a report entitled Enabling Engineering Student Success. This report was recently highlighted by NSF.

A New Name for an Expanding Department

On January 1, 2009, the Department of Technical Communication (TC) rang in the new year with a new department name: Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE). The new name helps to highlight the expanding curriculum and research of a department that has been in the UW College of Engineering for over three decades.
