Emeritus Professor David Farkas continues as an active researcher and seeks to change patterns of recreation

Since transitioning to emeritus status in 2014, HCDE Professor David K. Farkas has remained an active researcher in the field of technical communication. He recently received the Ken Rainey research award from the Society for Technical Communication for repeatedly demonstrating the ability to make research accessible across academic and industry communities.

Ribes and Sutherland co–author new paper about transdisciplinary collaboration in data science

HCDE Professor David Ribes and PhD student Will Sutherland are co-authors on a new paper: Ten simple rules to Cultivate Transdisciplinary Collaboration in Data Science. The paper, published in the PLOS Computational Biology journal, highlights facilitating collaboration, but not replacing the societal function of successful research.

HCDE faculty and staff receive awards from the College of Engineering

The College of Engineering annually acknowledges the extraordinary efforts of the college’s teaching and research assistants, staff and faculty members with awards. In 2021, a new awards category was added for faculty and staff who demonstrated outstanding work during the challenging year of remote operations. Both Kate Starbird, HCDE associate professor, and Leah Pistorius, HCDE communications manager, received awards in the outstanding category.

The annual awards honor students who have distinguished themselves by demonstrating greatness in academic excellence, leadership and engagement, and innovation.

HCDE Professor Nadya Peek receives UW Distinguished Teaching Award for Innovation with Technology

Nadya Peek's digital fabrication course relies on in-person instruction in a makerspace where students can access 3D printers. When the pandemic made that impossible, Professor Peek developed a new curriculum that helped students master computer-aided design and 3D printing skills from home.

HCDE Affiliate Instructor Daniella Kim receives the 2021 Mikey Award

The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering is presenting the 2021 Mikey Award to Dr. Daniella Kim, UX research leader and an affiliate instructor in HCDE. The Myron L. White Award, or the "Mikey Award," is named after the co-founder of the department. It is presented annually by HCDE faculty to leaders in the field and dedicated friends of the department.
