HCDE PhD student Jay Cunningham named Student Regent

Jay Cunningham, a PhD candidate in HCDE, has been appointed by Washington Governor Jay Inslee to serve on the University of Washington's Board of Regents. Cunningham is a researcher who works to advance public interest technology, responsible AI, and AI innovation as tools of liberation and justice for underrepresented users and marginalized communities. He is also a passionate servant leader with a lifelong interest in community building and activism.

Coordinating response

An HCDE team led by Professor Mark Haselkorn is building the Virtual Coordination Center, a cloud-based platform for real-time data sharing and coordinated response to quickly clear roadway incidents—while preparing Seattle-area agencies for a collaborative response to “the big one.”

A research team led by HCDE assistant professor Sucheta Ghoshal has received a new grant to study systems of workplace accountability in the wake of recent layoffs in the US technology industry.

HCDE alumnus Jerrod Larson receives the 2023 Mikey Award

HCDE presents the 2023 Mikey Award to HCDE alumnus Dr. Jerrod Larson. The Myron L. White Award, or the Mikey Award, is named after the co-founder of the department. It is presented annually by HCDE faculty to a dedicated supporter of the department.

Even with access to recipes online or passed down through generations, it’s hard to balance the complicated process of cooking with the sensory details from a memory. HCDE PhD student Danli Luo has developed a toolkit of sensors and controllers that helped her re-create three dishes from growing up in China: rice wine, tofu and spring roll wrappers.
