Society for Social Studies of Science (4S Conference) 2021

By Neilly Herrera Tan, PhD student in HCDE

I was able to attend the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S Conference) for a presentation of our work on smart cameras titled, "Material Experiments and Playful Disruptions: Interrogating Boundaries, Meanings, and Aesthetics of the Smart Camera." This presentation was based on a DRG I led in Winter 2021 alongside Richmond Wong, our collaborator and lead presenter from UC Berkeley's Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity. Richmond and I led this DRG with guidance from Prof. James Pierce (School of Art + Art History + Design), where we worked with two HCID Master's students to examine the smart home camera in new ways through creative experiments. It was a fruitful experience to be able to present our work, which all stemmed from being able to foster new collaborations across many departments and universities.
