A New Name for an Expanding Department

On January 1, 2009, the Department of Technical Communication (TC) rang in the new year with a new department name: Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE). The new name helps to highlight the expanding curriculum and research of a department that has been in the UW College of Engineering for over three decades.

Bucky to the Rescue

HCDE has a new a mascot: Bucky the PeopleBot robot. PeopleBot is a trade name of Mobile Robots, Inc., which builds robots for research and industry.

ATTW Call for Papers

The Association of Teachers of Technical Writing (ATTW) invites proposals for papers, poster presentations, and workshops to be given at its annual conference immediately preceding the CCCC, March 17, 2010. This year's conference theme is "Synergies: The Intersections of Research and Teaching" and the conference will be held in Louisville, KY.

HCDE Wins Dawg Daze Contest

Thanks largely to our energetic and proactive student assistants Maryam Ahmed and Matthew Stonebroker, HCDE won honors in the Dawg Daze annual decoration challenge aimed to welcome new and returning students with spirit. What a great way to show off our new space, too!

Beth Kolko Survives Indonesia Earthquake

Beth Kolko experienced the magnitude 7 earthquake on Java, Indonesia September 7 while on the 13th floor of an office building. She has been interviewed by CNN regarding the incident. Kolko was in the area conducting research.

HCDE Students and Faculty Shine at 2009 IPCC Conference

The 2009 IPCC Conference was held July 19–22 in Hawaii. Students and faculty from the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) attended and presented in record numbers.

Keith Butler Joins HCDE as Affiliate Faculty

Keith Butler earned his PhD at Tufts University in cognitive psychology and quantitative research methods. He has been a lecturer at Emmanuel College, a member of technical staff at Bell Labs, a technical fellow at Boeing, and recently a director at Microsoft. He is one of the originators of usability engineering, and a former chair of the SIGCHI conference. His current research interests focus on effective information systems for health care, and synchronizing the representations used by designers and programmers. The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) recognized five students and one community member for the department's annual recognition awards, presented at the 2009 graduation ceremony on June 13th.

Mark Haselkorn participating in Maritime and Port Security Summit

The 2nd Annual Conference on Safety and Security Education and Research (SASER) is being held in conjunction with the 2009 Maritime and Port Security Summit: Resiliency Planning in a Difficult Economy. The summit will be held on May 28th and 29th at the Bell Harbor Conference Center, Seattle, WA.

Undergraduate Jacob Warren will present his research at the Annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium on Friday, May 15th. Jacob will present his findings from the Windows Mobile 6.1 Help System User Research Project led by HCDE Lecturer Karen Kasonic.

HCDE Sponsors DUB Reception at CHI 2009

The University of Washington's Design, Use, Build (DUB) group, a coalition of faculty and students working in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), hosted a reception for friends and colleagues at the CHI 2009 Conference. Over 300 people attended the event intended to celebrate the success of UW at the CHI conference this year. The event was co-sponsored by numerous faculty and DUB-affiliated departments and organizations, including Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE).

Kientz Builds Baby Steps System

Assistant Professor Julie Kientz has built a high-tech tool that takes photos and video, creates an online diary and family newsletters, and at the same time tracks a child's developmental milestones. The multimedia system is called Baby Steps and is getting press here in the US and in Dutch media outlets.

Atman wins David B. Thorud Leadership Award

Professor Cindy Atman has received the David B. Thorud Leadership Award, which honors those who lead, serve, inspire and collaborate beyond regular responsibilities.
