HCDE Celebrates 2nd Birthday and 1st Annual Corporate Affiliates Day

HCDE celebrated its 2nd birthday as the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering in style on Wednesday, February 23, with an all day program for its Corporate Affiliate members, followed by a rousing Open House in the evening.

Julianna Jones Presents Paper in Rome

Julianna Jones, MS student in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE), traveled to Rome in February to present a paper at the Fifth International Conference on Design Principles and Practice. Jones reported on her trip upon her return.

Mark Zachry Elected Associate Fellow of STC

Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) Professor Mark Zachry has just received one of the highest honors awarded by the Society of Technical Combination (STC)—he has been elected as an Associate Fellow (STC).

re:Design Awarded by the Society for Technical Communication

Congratulations to the 2010 re:Design team for receiving a Society for Technical Communication (STC) Puget Sound competition award. Co-manager Alena Benson and Design Lead Mike Watt received the award at the STC competition showcase in Seattle on January 18, 2011.

HCDE and CSE Capstone Class Develops Ultrasound

As part of a capstone class, UW students and faculty from the Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) departments took on this challenge and worked together to develop a low-cost, easy-to-use portable ultrasound for midwives that will be tested in Uganda later this year.

The HCDE Diversity Board launched a diversity-focused mentorship program in November, 2009. The program matches volunteer alumni with undergraduate students looking for mentors in industry who can inform them about career paths, educational backgrounds, and fields.
