HCDE Metrics Tracking Data Access & Transparency Policy

Updated July 2021

In 2019, the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering adopted a five-year strategic plan aimed at expanding awareness of our research and academic programs, advancing diversity and equity across our work and communities, and ensuring that we maintain a world-class educational experience.

One goal of the strategic plan is to advance HCDE as a high quality, influential, interdisciplinary design and engineering program, and ensure our mission and vision are widely recognized.

To meet this goal, HCDE is gathering data on key metrics to measure growth over time. Data is collected through student databases, grant reports, faculty CVs, HR reports, and surveys the department sends to the following audiences: prospective students, current students, and alumni.

All data collected via surveys and other sources will remain anonymized with no FERPA-protected data, such as student names or identifying information, stored in our databases. To the extent possible, we will avoid collecting or storing data in such a way that it could be re-identified.

Raw data from surveys will only be accessible to the following HCDE faculty and staff members who have access to our department metrics drive: department chair, associate chair, communications manager, assistant to chair, administrator, director of student services, BS program chair, MS program chair, PhD program chair. Aggregate and anonymized summaries of the data is available to the wider HCDE community of students, faculty, staff, and the External Advisory Board.
