Collaboration Opportunities

Avenues for industry and community partners to work with students and faculty in the University of Washington's Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering.

Propose a Capstone Project

HCDE accepts proposals for Capstone projects at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Capstone projects are student-run, large-scale projects that encompass two quarters of student work. Supporter involvement can be as little as providing project ideas or as much as full-on mentoring.

Propose a Usability Studies Class Project

Smaller in scale than capstone projects, these class projects can last anywhere from 3-9 weeks. In HCDE’s Usability Studies course, students perform user testing and provide recommendations to industry clients.

Mentoring Pods

HCDE Mentoring Pods is a program where 2-3 students are grouped with one industry mentor. Pods meet virtually, once per month from January through May. Meeting times are determined based on the mentor's availability. Discussion topics might include interviewing skills, portfolios, LinkedIn profiles, whiteboarding practice, navigating job descriptions, salaries and negotiation, networking techniques, UX titles, pivoting to UX from other industries, and other topics of interest to the specific pod. Sign up to mentor a pod here »

Career and Recruitment Events

Partner with HCDE to recruit top talent for your job and internship opportunities. Post your jobs and internships to the HCDE Job Board, participate in the HCDE Career Fair, host on-campus Information Sessions in the year, participate in career panels, and review portfolios of graduating students at HCDE's portfolio review events.

Community Affiliates Partners

Through the HCDE Community Affiliate Partner Program, students work with nonprofit and community partners on projects by applying human-centered design methods. Community organizations may submit their contact information to students to discuss available projects.

Propose a Design Jam

Design Jams are very short events where industry sponsors present a focused design problem or topic for student teams to tackle in a condensed timeframe (one evening to one weekend). Student teams brainstorm and work together to create a deliverable and share back ideas.

Propose a Research Topic

Research sponsors run a Directed Research Group in conjunction with a member of HCDE's faculty. Directed Research Groups are offered every academic quarter and students across HCDE's undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs receive credit for the course. Sponsored research requires a high level of involvement and therefore provides the greatest amount of interaction with students and faculty.
