HCDE Student Travel Report: ACM International Conference on Supporting Group Work

By Hongdi Xu

I have funding from HCDE to attend the ACM international conference on Supporting Group Work (GROUP) 2025 from Jan. 12 to Jan. 15 in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This is my first time publishing a paper and presenting it to peers and professors in person.

I presented my first-authored full paper about how anonymity and social ties on social media influence users' personal experience sharing. One interesting contribution is that anonymity and social ties interact with each other to impact posting willingness on social media (but not solely function!), which results in different sharing behaviors. People were interested in my methodologies and findings and we had a lot of discussions, which definitely broadened my research thoughts in this field.

When I saw someone’s study that might catch my attention and interest (mostly because we were studying a similar topic), I tried to stop and talk with them to exchange ideas about why and how we did these things. Through socializing with other attendees, who are mostly PhD students/candidates in the US, I gained a lot of new friends and we connected on social media such as LinkedIn. The connections gained through this journey will not only help me to find other folks in the same or similar research field but also provide me the opportunity to collaborate in future studies or even get a job. I would definitely say that this experience would support me a lot in my research career and thank HCDE funded me to have this valuable opportunity!
