Fellowships & scholarships

PhD students are encouraged to pursue fellowships and scholarships throughout the program. These opportunities can provide additional funding for tuition, living expenses, research, and other costs, and may extend the funding available to students beyond their HCDE funding guarantee.

Some major fellowships are designed for students who are applying to or beginning a PhD program. HCDE students have successfully received fellowships such as the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) and CSGrad4US. Students interested in these opportunities are encouraged to begin exploring them early, as application timelines and eligibility requirements vary.

HCDE faculty and students can help first-year students navigate the fellowship application process. Throughout the year, the PhD Faculty Director and Director of Academic Services also share UW and external fellowship and scholarship opportunities with students by email.
