HeadshotCindy Atman, Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, presented her research as part of the 2022 Extraordinary Engineering Impacts on Society symposium.

The Extraordinary Engineering Impacts on Society Symposium was sponsored by the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Engineering and organized by the National Academy of Engineering. The 2022 symposium explored how the support of fundamental engineering and engineering education research by the National Science Foundation has led to positive societal and economic impacts.

Thanks to support from the National Science Foundation in several different forms, Professor Atman has studied how engineers engage in design in order to inform the teaching of design.

In her presentation, Researching and Teaching Engineering Design, Atman describes the work that has gone into creating Design Signatures. The Design Signatures project aims to help designers track activities in their design processes, helping them visualize their processes to become better designers over time.
