The Master of Science in Human Centered Design & Engineering is 50 credits total and takes most students two years to complete.
Tuition for the Master's program will cost $998 per credit for Academic Year 2025-2026. Tuition rates may experience modest changes yearly and this estimate is provided solely for planning purposes. View the Department's 5-year fee management plan here.
In addition to tuition, fee-based degree students pay required student fees and a required registration fee each quarter. A detailed breakdown of fees by credit amount can be found here.
International students in an F or J visa status at UW are required by federal and state laws to maintain health insurance while studying in the U.S. All F-1 and J-1 eligible international students who are enrolled in an academic program of study and issued an I-20 or DS-2019 by an approved UW Designated School Official (DSO), and are residing in the U.S. are required to purchase the UW’s International Student Health Insurance Plan (ISHIP).
Full Time Enrollment
Students who attend full time typically take 8-10 credits per quarter. Students on F-1 visas are required to register for 10 credits. A 10 credit quarterly schedule would total $10,403 per quarter for tuition, including estimated fees. The estimated total cost breakdown for the 2025–2026 academic year is shown below:
$9,980* | Tuition for 10 credits ($998/credit) |
$423 | |
$10,403 | per quarter (assuming 10 credits) |
Part Time Enrollment
Students who attend part time can anticipate the following estimated cost per quarter:
$3,992* | Tuition for 4 credits ($998/credit) |
$295 | |
$4,287 | per quarter (assuming 4 credits) |
*Note: The quarterly tuition and fees total estimates do not include the cost of course materials. We do not require textbooks in the MS program, and very few of our courses require a separate course fee. Tuition rates may experience modest changes yearly and this estimate is provided solely for planning purposes.
Residency does not affect tuition/fees
Tuition Deadlines
Tuition is due by the third Friday of the quarter. All students enrolled in a fee-based master’s program are responsible for two financial statements in the MyUW online portal. HCDE master’s students submit payments for student fees to Student Fiscal Services and tuition payments to PCE-Continuum College. Additional details and payment options are listed in the Payment Procedures for Fee-Based Degree Students.
Tuition Exemption Unavailable
The HCDE Master's program is a self-sustaining program (i.e., not state-supported) and therefore does not participate in the University of Washington's Tuition Exemption program.
Financial Aid
The HCDE Master's program does not have the resources to offer direct tuition support/scholarships to students. Federal student loans may be available to students who have filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
