Gary Hsieh, Associate Professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, will visit the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan for the 2019-2020 academic year on a Fulbright Scholar grant.

The Fulbright program is one of the most prestigious programs in the world focused on international educational exchange. The award will enable Hsieh to bring his expertise in theory-driven behavior change to National Tsing Hua University’s Institute of Service Science (ISS), and to the Taiwan and Asia human-computer interaction (HCI) communities at large.

Hsieh’s research focuses on enabling designers to apply the insights embedded in academic research. His work seeks to improve our understanding of behavior change, as well as offer design insights on behavior change technologies across many different contexts.

The graduate program ISS integrates science, technology, management, and design, and students are learning to be future leaders in service innovation. As a visiting Associate Professor, Hsieh will teach a course he developed on theory-driven behavior change design, facilitating students’ ability to apply social and behavioral science insights, and improve their design thinking and skills.

The Fulbright award will allow Hsieh to bridge the HCI community in Taiwan with the University of Washington's HCI community, and exchange ideas that can further strengthen the growth of interdisciplinary research. He will be working with Dr. Yuan-Chi Tseng, a scholar of design, informatics, and social and behavioral science.

Hsieh lived in Taiwan as a child and attended elementary school there. He looks forward to returning to a place he once called home – reconnecting with the country, discovering new trends and opportunities in Taiwan, and contributing to their higher education and technology development.
