Degree Requirements

The curriculum described below is in effect for all Human Centered Design & Engineering undergraduate students admitted in Spring 2015 and into the 2015-2016 academic year. Students who entered the program before 2015 may elect to follow this curriculum or follow the previous degree requirements.

 

To graduate, students in the HCDE bachelor's program must complete 180 credits of the following:

Students are encouraged to use UW's MyPlan to plan their schedule. Current and prospective HCDE students may also run a DARS report through myUW to track their progress. Students interested in substituting a course required by HCDE curriculum with another must fill out the form linked below.

General Education Requirements

HCDE undergraduate students complete 88 credits of  general education requirements, which includes 8 credits of written and oral communication; 30 credits in Visual, Literary, & Performing Arts and Individuals & Societies; and 50 credits of natural world courses.

Written and Oral Communication (8 credits)

3 credits HCDE 231: Intro to Technical Writing

5 credits of English Composition

VLPA and I&S (30 credits)

Of the 30 credits, minimum 10 credits in Visual, Literary, & Performing Arts (VLPA)

Of the 30 credits, minimum 10 credits in Individuals & Societies (I&S)

Courses that count toward these requirements are identified as VLPA or I&S in the quarterly Time Schedule and in the UW Catalog.

Natural World (50 credits)

Of the 50, minimum 15 credits in mathematics from the following list:

Course Substitution Petition

Use this form to request that a course be applied toward a particular graduation requirement. Substitutions will not be made for Written and Oral Communication, VLPA and I&S, or in most cases, HCDE Core Courses.
