David W. McDonald, Professor of Human Centered Design & Engineering, and collaborators received the 10-year Impact Award at Ubicomp 2018 for the paper "Flowers or a Robot Army? Encouraging Awareness & Activity with Personal, Mobile Displays."

Originally published in 2008 in the Proceedings of the 10th international conference on Ubiquitous computing, the research looks at how personal, mobile displays (like on a smart phone) can be used more effectively for awareness displays. The paper includes results from a field experiment that investigated the effectiveness of these displays as a means for improving awareness of daily life, such as self-monitoring physical activity.

The 10-year Impact Award annually recognizes the paper that has had the greatest impact over the previous decade. Co-authors on the paper with McDonald are Sunny Consolvo, Predrag Klasnja, Daniel Avrahami, Jon Froehlich, Louis LeGrand, Ryan Libby, Keith Mosher, and James A. Landay. 

The award was presented to the researchers at the 2018 Ubicomp conference in October 2018, in Singapore.
