Costs and Financing
This page includes the projected costs for tuition and other fees, as well as information for graduate assistantships.
Projected Costs for Tuition and Fees
When you register for courses at the University of Washington, you must pay the associated tuition and related fees for those classes, unless you officially drop your classes by the end of the first week of the quarter. You are billed tuition based on the number of credit hours, including audit courses, that you are registered for at the beginning of the quarter.
Tuition is due by the third Friday of each quarter. If you are a current student, you may check your student account, including tuition and other finances, on MYUW.
Tuition is set annually by the state legislature. For proposed tuition rates for the upcoming year, please consult the Student Fiscal Services website. For more information on establishing residency in the state of Washington, see the UW Residency Office website. Applicants may also consider HCDE’s evening Master's program, which costs approximately $10,000 per year.
Students in the day MS-HCDE program pay Tier III graduate tuition.
Graduate Assistantships
The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineer offers Teaching Assistantships (TAs) and Research Assistantships (RAs) to graduate students who are enrolled in full-time study (10 credits/quarter). Students who are interested in serving as a TA or RA should indicate so on their HCDE application materials. The HCDE department does not have a separate application form for TA or RA positions.
The benefits of a TA and RA position include a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. For more information on the specific benefits, see the Graduate Student Service Appointments website: http://www.grad.washington.edu/fellow/gradservice.htm.
Returning students and newly admitted HCDE graduate students have priority for open TA positions. The Director of the Engineering Coordination Program manages the TAs for all sections of HCDE 231 (formerly TC 231), Introduction to Technical Writing, and HCDE 333 (formerly TC 333), Advanced Technical Writing and Oral Communication. With guidance from the Director, the TAs are the only instructors for these courses, and they are responsible for teaching, grading, and other course duties.
Research Assistantships are often available in conjunction with the funded research of individual faculty members. Faculty members who have funds to support graduate students generally advertise the open positions and select the most qualified applicants.
