Office Staff Profiles
Office staff in the department of Human Centered Design & Engineering support the department in a number of ways. A summary of their responsibilities is below. Staff contact information is available on the Staff page.
Erin manages fiscal planning and budgeting, human resources (staff and student employees), leads efforts for developing and implementing departmental procedures for non-academic related issues, oversees space/facilities planning, oversees grant/contract activities, and manages the Corporate Affiliates Program.
Susan is responsible for managing HCDE's grant and contract program from proposal development, through post-award reconciliation of project funding, to coordinating final reporting to sponsors and closing of the award. In addition, she assists the Department Administrator in overseeing certain portions of HCDE’s directed gifts, UW internal awards, and faculty start-up accounts. Her commitments, in relation to these funding sources include developing, then communicating policies and procedures for pre- / post-award administrative functions, as well as ensuring HCDE’s sponsored, and other project funds, are in compliance with UW, federal, and state policies/procedures.
Melissa Ewing, Corporate Affiliates Program & Events Manager
Melissa manages the Corporate Affiliates Program, leads outreach efforts to HCDE alumni and other community members, and plans events for the department.
Stacia maintains the Chair's calendar, schedules meetings, drafts communications, directs COE and UW award nomination processes, manages special events, manages departmental academic human resources (faculty appointments, re-appointments, sabbatical requests, merit review process, promotion, tenure, etc.), coordinates faculty meetings, and processes gifts.
The Program Coordinator works directly with HCDE's advising staff to manage classroom planning, book and course evaluation ordering, coordinate event planning related to academic information sessions, graduation, and other departmental events, assist advising staff with admissions, and provide general support to the Director of Student Services.
Christie coordinates travel, including reimbursements, planning, and advances, coordinates petty cash and check requests for reimbursements, manages ProCard reconciliation, equipment inventory and insurance, and collaborates with Grants Coordinator, as needed, on fiscal management of grants/contracts, faculty start-ups and gift budgets.
Allen manages payroll for HCDE employees and other Workday functions.
Alex advises prospective and current undergraduate students on admissions processes and program requirements, serves on the undergraduate curriculum committee, facilitates the undergraduate admission process, and hosts undergraduate recruiting events.
Leah maintains the department website and social media, designs and maintains publications and marketing materials, publicizes departmental news and events, and manages the department's communication and marketing plans.
Kathleen advises prospective and current Master’s and Certificate students on admissions processes and program requirements, serves on the MS curriculum committee, facilitates the graduate admission process, and hosts departmental graduate recruiting events both locally and nationwide.
Scott manages computer resources and services to support the educational and research mission of the department. This includes managing the department's computer and network equipment, software, educational computer labs, and server infrastructure.
Elaine administers daily oversight of the department's sponsored research activities, manages faculty budgets (grants, start-up, gifts), administers purchasing related to faculty budgets, and coordinates with the Fiscal Specialist on payroll functions/travel reimbursements/Procard purchases related to faculty budgets.
Jane manages the front department office, provides staff support for space management and analysis, and provides administrative support for the department faculty.
