Taryn Bipat, a PhD student in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, received the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award, announced UW Provost Mark Richards at the 2020 Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Every year, students who present work at the UW’s Undergraduate Research Symposium are invited to nominate their mentor for special recognition. Bipat was selected as the graduate student mentor out of 188 nominees this year.

UW Provost Mark Richards thanks mentors of undergraduate researchers and recognizes this year's Research Mentor Awardees in this video:

Bipat mentors three groups of UW students who are studying what collaboration looks like in different language editions of Wikipedia: in French, English, and Spanish. The team of students who were studying at the  Spanish version of Wikipedia presented their work at this year's Research Symposium. All undergraduates on the project are Spanish speakers who spent roughly six months qualitatively coding a Spanish dataset. The students Taryn mentored also presented this work at the ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) in 2019.
