Brock Craft joins HCDE faculty

April 20, 2024

Brock CraftThe department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) is thrilled to announce that Dr. Brock Craft will be joining its faculty as a Senior Lecturer, beginning August 2015.

Craft comes to HCDE from Goldsmiths, University of London, where he is a Lecturer in Physical Computing, and from London’s Royal College of Art where he is a Senior Tutor on the MA in Information Experience Design—a program that he co-created.

Early in Craft’s career, he spent ten years working in network administration. “My day-to-day job was helping people use technology,” Craft described. “As a network manager I was really able to see the frustration that comes from people using technology that isn’t designed with their needs in mind.” His interest in improving people’s experience with technology led him to complete a Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) from DePaul University in Chicago, and later a PhD in Data Visualization from the University College of London Interaction Centre (UCLIC), an HCI research center.

In 2007 he helped form Tinker London, a design consultancy focused on creating products that bridge the digital and the physical. As a partner at Tinker London, Craft designed products and experiences for several high-profile clients including Sony, Nokia, and the BBC.

Bridging his industry work with teaching and learning, Craft served as a research fellow at the London Knowledge Lab, where he focused on Learning Design, tools for pedagogy design, technology-enhanced learning, and interactive learning objects.

“I have been investigating how people interact with technology and then working to make it better for my entire career,” Craft said. “What excites me about coming to HCDE in the Senior Lecturer role is I will be able to take my experience and knowledge and focus on designing and delivering effective, human-centered educational experiences.”
