Title: "Place-Sensitive Interaction Design: Augmenting Experiences in the Physical World"
Speaker: Luigina Ciolfi, Lecturer in Interaction Design in the Dept. of Computer Science and Information Systems, and Senior Researcher at the Interaction Design Centre at the University of Limerick, Ireland
Date: Thursday, February 16, 2012
Time: 10:30-11:30 AM
Location: Allen Auditorium, Allen Library, UW Seattle campus

Abstract
The talk will provide an overview of a "place-sensitive" approach to the augmentation of physical environments through interactive technologies, centered on understanding, supporting and enriching people's lived experiences in the physical world. "Place" refers to the physical environment as it is invested by the qualities of human experience, and placemaking is the active process of connecting and relating to locations that become meaningful in our lives. The talk will discuss how a place-sensitive approach can lead to a greater understanding of how people establish meaningful relationships at personal, cultural, social and physical levels to the places they experience, and to successful design interventions. Examples of empirical work will be used to illustrate how a concern for place has led to rich interactions in a variety of environments.
