The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) is pleased to announce the promotion of faculty member Dr. Gary Hsieh to Associate Professor with Tenure, effective at the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year.

Dr. Hsieh's research focuses on understanding, designing, and developing motivators that encourage people to communicate and interact in ways that are self- and welfare-improving. His work extends and builds on theories from a number of fields, including psychology, communication and economics. Hsieh's application areas include behavior change, online support and Q&A, and civic and local participation.

Dr. Hsieh directs HCDE’s Prosocial Computing Laboratory and holds an adjunct faculty position in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at University of Washington.

His research has been supported by National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, and Intel.
