The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Gary Hsieh as an Assistant Professor in HCDE. Hsieh will join HCDE's faculty beginning in June 2013. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University with a joint appointment in the Department of Communication and the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media.
Hsieh’s research focuses on understanding, designing, and developing motivators that encourage people to communicate and interact in ways that are self- and welfare-improving. Hsieh’s application areas include online news sharing, social question and answer, and health behavior change. Hsieh received his PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University in 2010. He received his undergraduate degree in Electric Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley in 2003. Hsieh was awarded a National Science Foundation Early Career Development Award in 2013.
