Congratulations to the Class of 2012

Friday, June 8, 2012

Graduating students in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) visited the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) on Friday, June 8, for HCDE's 2012 Commencement Ceremony.

HCDE alumnus Matt Shobe gave the commencement address, in which he emphasized the importance of networking to promote both creativity and collaboration.

The Class of 2012 included 22 students graduating with a Bachelor of Science, 43 students graduating with a Master of Science, and 2 students graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. The full list of graduates is below.

In addition to these degrees, HCDE's annual Awards of Excellence were presented to graduating students who demonstrated special strength in the following categories:

  • Academic Excellence: Undergraduate student Rachel W. Reynard, and graduate student Dr. Natasha Jones
  • Innovation: Undergraduate student William Brian Espinosa, graduate student Kristina Krause
  • Leadership and Engagement: Undergraduate student Julius Caesar S. Magsino, graduate student Alexis Hope

The 2012 Myron L. White Award (aka the "Mikey") was given to Matt Shobe. Beginning in 2004, HCDE has annually awarded the Myron L. White Award to a dedicated friend to the department. Shobe, an alumnus of HCDE's Master's program, founded the Shobe Prize in 2010 and serves on the department's External Advisory Board. Shobe joins the ranks of other distinguished recipients of the award.

The ceremony ended with the world premiere of the HCDE Student Association's dance video.

Reflecting on the day, Department Chair Jan Spyridakis commented, "It was an honor to host our Commencement and see our graduates celebrating the day with their families. I am always struck by the creativity, caliber, and determination of our students, and it is exciting to see where they're headed next."

Please join HCDE in congratulating the Class of 2012!
