Annual Shobe Prize luncheon

Tuesday, June 3, 2014

HCDE alumnus Matt Shobe, founder of the Shobe Prize for dub Entrepreneurs, sat down for lunch with the 2014 winning teams Disco and Fidgt on Tuesday, June 3, to congratulate the teams on all of their hard work so far. Both teams were excited to share their project progress—team Fidgt brought 3D-printed prototypes of their ring project (designed to be a bluetooth-enabled controller to allow for eyes-free computing), and Disco demoed their app that shoots and shares animated gifs.

“I’m so proud of both teams. Seeing the progress you have made so far is the most exciting part of this for me,” Shobe told the group. “You all have navigated some tricky challenges in this process…I’m glad we can come together and celebrate the work you’ve done.” He also spoke about the supportive nature the University of Washington offers to aspiring entrepreneurs with the opening of the new “Startup Hub” in UW’s Condon Hall. This summer, Shobe will be moving a desk into the new Condon Hall space.

Phill Pasqual from team Fidgt thanked Shobe for his mentorship and financial support, saying that their team wouldn’t have made it this far without his help. Pasqual also noted that the team appreciates the office space that came with the Prize, joking that he has been living there.

Team Disco will present their project at the HCDE Capstone & Research Showcase on Wednesday, June 4, and team Fidgt will present at the iSchool Capstone event on Thursday, June 5. Both teams will share their final deliverables with HCDE Corporate Affiliates Program members at the HCDE Corporate Affiliates Day in October 2014.
