Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) Department Chair and Professor Jan Spyridakis and HCDE students and alumni [Dr. Natasha Jones, University of New Mexico (PhD 2012); Justin McDavid, IBM (MS 2012); Katie Derthick, current PhD student (MS 2010); and Randy Dowell, Boeing (MS 2009)] have been awarded "Best Article Reporting Qualitative or Quantitative Research in Technical or Scientific Communication" by the Conference on College Composition and Communication. The paper, “Plain Language in Environmental Policy Documents: An Assessment of Reader Comprehension and Perceptions," was originally published in Volume 42 Issue 4 of the Journal of Technical Writing and Communication.

The team researched the effectiveness of the use of Plain English in Environmental Impact Statements, and Spyridakis formed a Directed Research Group to conduct the research. Grants from Washington State Department of Transportation and Parametrix helped fund the research.
