Human-Robot Communication Lab (HRCL)

The Human-Robot Communication Laboratory (HRCL) explores how humans select, package, and exchange information when they communicate with robots. Focusing specifically on spatial and referential communication, HRCL researchers use experimental methods to answer cognitive, social, and linguistic questions about human-robot communication.

Some current research topics include:

  • Identifying linguistic features of robot-directed speech
  • Improving the design of natural language interfaces for robots
  • Evaluating information exchange between humans and autonomous robotic systems
  • Understanding the conceptualization of robots as interactive partners

Undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of departments work in the lab, which is always searching for talented students who are interested in doing experimental research in human-robot communication. If you are a current or prospective student who is interested in conducting research in the lab, please contact Professor Sarah Kriz (kriz @ u.washington.edu).
