PhD Advising
Applicants to the PhD program should work with the staff adviser, Gian Bruno and the PhD Program Director, Mark Zachry, who serves as faculty adviser for students early in their program. Gian can provide information about the administrative process and Professor Zachry can provide information about curricular goals and processes. Be sure to check the admissions FAQ page for information also.
Newly admitted PhD students will meet with the PhD faculty adviser, Mark Zachry, to plan their degree.
Current PhD students meet regularly with the PhD faculty adviser until they have selected their supervisory committee chair. PhD students may select their committee chair as early as they wish, but they must have a committee chair in place within two quarters of completing their Preliminary Exam. After a student has selected his/her committee chair, this person will be the student's "adviser" throughout the remainder of their PhD program. Note: the UW Graduate School requires that the entire doctoral supervisory committee be established at least four months before the request for the General Examination is submitted.
The UW Graduate School requires that each department have a "Graduate Program Coordinator" and a "Graduate Program Assistant." If you find references to these people, in TC the Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) is Professor Mark Zachry and the Graduate Program Assistant (GPA) is Gian Bruno.
