Emeritus Faculty
Listed below are HCDE's emeritus faculty. Some are still deeply involved in the department and continue to contribute to all that we do. All had incredible dedication to teaching, research, and service at the UW.
Phil Bereano(pbereano@u.washington.edu): Technology and public policy; technology assessment; assessments of genetic/computer/information technologies; citizen participation in technology policy decision making; technology and civil liberties.
Mary Coney (mconey@u.washington.edu): Rhetoric in technical discourse: evaluating and designing personas online; roles and functions of readers and writers in the communication process; critical theories of knowledge and scientific texts.
Myron "Mike"White: With James Souther, founded the Department of Humanistic-Social Studies (HSS) and extended teaching of technical writing to include a series of courses for students interested in the profession of technical communication. In 1989 after HSS was dissolved the Department of Technical Communication (TC) was established within the College of Engineering. TC changed its name to Human Centered Design & Engineering in 2009.
Tom Williams (tomwill@u.washington.edu): Visual media; investigation of the effects of graphic variables on attention, comprehension, recall, and performance.
